The Medical Supply Company Laboratory Cup

Laboratory Cup Coombe winning team 2017

Medical Supply Company Laboratory Cup:

Year on year the MSC Lab cup seems to be growing with more and more Irish Laboratories within the Clinical, research and Pharma fields competing. In 2017 it was great to have one of MSC’s Italian partners Diapath S.p.A. (who provide innovative solutions for cell pathology) join in.

The 2017 tournament last September started off as a bright day only for the black clouds to descend by 3pm and for the 3rd year in a row both players and pitches were drenched within a few minutes. However, this did not dampen the spirits or the competiveness of the players and spectators at the Spawell, Templeogue on the day.

An even larger event on the previous year we had 14 teams competing: MSC, Diapath S.p.A., St James Hospital, The Coombe Hospital, Crumlin Hospital, The AMNCH, Pfizer, The Conway Institute UCD, Identigen, St Vincent’s Hospital, The Irish Equine Centre, The NVRL, Beaumont Hospital, The Conway Exiles UCD, Holles St/St Luke’s (mixed team) We saw many different games played, a lot of serious and competitive football, some outrageous fouls, and a lot of laughs from the not so serious contenders. The addition of the Italian team brought with it everything you can expect from an Italian team…. most noticeably their coloured socks and bronzed limbs. As the afternoon progressed we saw the teams dwindle out and depart for first dibs on the showers.

The final was between The Conway Institute, UCD and The Coombe Hospital. This wasn’t the first final for the Conway so with Luke Millington urging his team on there was all to play for. We saw some fine skills from the females from both sides with a considerable experienced female team for Crumlin v’s the scantily subbed team for The Conway. Alas, whether we blame the weather, fitness levels or the referee, 2017 was to be the year for The Coombe Hospital much to our resident referee Derer Merrin’s (formerly of the Coombe) delight. A well-deserved win for a team who show commitment each year. Once dried off everyone adjourned to “The Laurels” to refuel and hydrate.

The cup was presented by Ms Eimear Scully (Managing Director of MSC) to Declan Lyons captain for the 2017 winners. The cheque which was subsidised by MSC, was subsequently presented to their nominated charity, The Irish Cancer Society. So, with the arrival of the bright evenings, it is time to dust off the boots and start training for the tournament on Friday September 14th. We will be changing venue to The National Sports Campus, Blanchardstown. Please register your interest with your MSC account manager Register here
