Ready-to-use ‘Starved Cells’ for GPT of R2A agar

Starved Cells, GPT agar, GPT of R2A agar, oligotrophic organisms | Medical Supply Company

If your lab is following the Japanese Pharmacopoeia (JP), you will be familiar with the requirement to use ‘starved cells’ for Growth Promotion Testing (GPT) of R2A agar. This agar is widely used to detect oligotrophic organisms, such as stressed or chlorine-resistant bacteria in purified or pharmaceutical water. The Japanese Pharmacopoeia states:

“Prior to the media growth promotion test, inoculate these strains into sterile purified water and incubate at 20-25°C for 3 days”

By placing your strain in sterile purified water for 3 days, you will mimic the low nutrient water environment found in pharmaceutical processes. This method not only adds 3 days on to your Growth Promotion Testing but requires further dilution steps to achieve the specified inoculating concentration of 50-200 CFU per ml.

To streamline this process and reduce your testing time, Microbiologics have developed EZ-Accu Shot Starved Cells which have undergone the starvation steps prior to lyophilisation. All that is left to do when you receive the strains is rehydrate the pellet in sterile water and inoculate your R2A agar to deliver the required concentration of 50-200 CFU.

The following strains are available in this format:

The EZ-Accu Shot Starved Cells kits are:

  • Fully traceable and ≤ 3 passages from the reference culture
  • Compliant with USP/Ph. Eur./JP requirements
  • Ready-to-use with no dilutions required
  • Stored at 2-8°C
