The importance of using external controls in molecular microbiology

The importance of using external controls in molecular microbiology quality controls qc panels external controls | Medical Supply Company

Has your lab invested in a biochemical or molecular-based microbial detection / identification system? If so, how often do you use external or ‘third party’ controls to assess its performance?

Quality control is your laboratories first line of defence against potentially disastrous errors. Most identification instruments come with internal controls, but since they are supplied by the manufacturer of the instrument, they are often optimised to perform well with that system. For this reason, it is vital that you also use external controls for an unbiased assessment of your instrument’s performance, as well as that of your procedures and reagents. It is especially important to use external controls in the following instances:

  • When validating the instrument/kit
  • When moving to a new method or supplier
  • When using a new lot of reagent
  • Before & after maintenance
  • When training or testing technician competency

“the use of third-party control materials should be considered, either instead of, or in addition to, any control materials supplied by the reagent or instrument manufacturer – ISO 15189”

Microbiologics offer quality control panels for use with open systems and specific molecular / biochemical instruments. Each instrument-specific panel contains the manufacturer-recommended QC strains in a simple, ready-to-use format to save time and money.

These QC panels can be used with a wide range of technologies, whether you require live microorganisms, inactivated microorganisms, synthetic DNA/RNA or genomic extracts. These panels do not need to be shipped on ice and have a minimum expiry date of 8 months.

Microbiologics manufacture QC panels for use with the following instruments:

  • Bruker MALDI Biotyper™
  • BD Max™
  • BD Viper™
  • Biolog
  • Cepheid GeneXpert™
  • Vitek® 2
  • BioFire FilmArray®
  • Nanosphere Verigene®
