Checkit – Why Temperature Monitoring in Clinical Labs Can’t Be Left to Chance

Clinical laboratories are complex, high-stakes environments where precision isn’t just ideal—it’s non-negotiable. Every sample, reagent, and recorded result plays a direct role in diagnostic accuracy and, ultimately, patient care. While lab professionals operate under intense pressure and heavy workloads, accuracy, compliance, and consistency must remain uncompromised. Unfortunately, many labs continue to depend on outdated systems and manual processes that are vulnerable to error—especially when it comes to monitoring cold storage conditions.

Temperature monitoring is not a routine task—it’s a safeguard.

Proper monitoring of refrigeration and cold storage equipment is essential for:

  • Preserving sample integrity – Temperature fluctuations can compromise biological specimens, leading to invalid results.
  • Maintaining reagent stability – Reagents stored outside specified conditions can degrade and affect test performance.
  • Ensuring regulatory compliance – Accreditation bodies require thorough, auditable records of storage conditions.
  • Protecting patient safety – A single temperature excursion can trigger cascading errors with serious clinical consequences.

Despite the clear risks, many labs still rely on handwritten logs, sporadic checks, or outdated data loggers. This leaves critical gaps in oversight and accountability.

Introducing Checkit: A Smarter, Safer Way to Monitor

The Checkit monitoring system replaces uncertainty with visibility, and manual workarounds with automation. This cloud-based platform integrates smart wireless sensors with intuitive software to provide real-time monitoring of temperature, humidity, gas levels, and pressure. Whether you’re overseeing a single fridge or managing cold storage across multiple lab sites, Checkit offers scalable, secure, and fully digital oversight—all from a single web-based dashboard.

Key benefits include:

  • Automated data capture – Eliminate manual logging and reduce the risk of human error.
  • Instant alerts – Receive real-time notifications of temperature deviations before they become problems.
  • Streamlined compliance – Generate auditable reports for inspections and regulatory reviews with just a few clicks.
  • Non-intrusive setup – No major IT integration or infrastructure changes required.

That’s why Checkit is the trusted solution for many HSE and NHS-accredited laboratories. In an environment where every result matters and every minute counts, robust temperature monitoring isn’t a luxury—it’s a necessity.

System hardware

WARP

The WARP is the central hub of the monitoring system—a discreet, wall-mounted panel that provides real-time visibility of all sensor data. It receives wireless transmissions from monitoring devices, automatically scrolling through live readings every 5 seconds. With a 7-hour backup power supply and long-term data storage of up to 30 years, the WARP ensures continuous data access and retention, even during outages.

Transmitters

The Checkit monitoring system uses a range of specialized wireless transmitters tailored to different equipment and conditions, including ambient rooms, incubators, fridges, freezers, and liquid nitrogen tanks. Transmitters may be single or dual channel, allowing monitoring of one or two parameters (e.g., temperature and humidity) simultaneously. Each unit is battery-powered with a 5-year lifespan.

Signal Repeater

The purpose of the signal repeater is to boost the transmission signal from distant wireless transmitters to the WARP panel. Wireless signal repeaters may or may not be installed in your facility depending on the specific installation configuration.

Benefits of Checkit

Comprehensive monitoring you can rely on

Manual monitoring is prone to errors—lost records, unclear handwriting, and inconsistent logging across shifts. Checkit connects sensors for temperature, humidity, gas, and pressure to deliver accurate, consistent, and automated monitoring.

Alerting & incident management

Digital monitoring systems provide real-time alerts for temperature breaches or equipment failures, enabling fast response to protect samples and prevent costly losses. Checkit offers 24/7 alarm support with multi-channel notifications via email, SMS, or phone, tailored to your institution’s needs.

Be audit ready with customisable reports & data insights

Clinical labs must maintain continuous temperature records to meet regulatory standards. Checkit simplifies audits by making historical data instantly accessible and downloadable. Reports (PDF or CSV) can be tailored for compliance, internal reviews, or performance tracking.

T-mesh self-healing network

If the WARP is the hub of the system, T-Mesh is the glue which holds the system together – a self-healing network. Signal repeaters will automatically seek and connect an alternative signal path to the WARP unit. Designed by Checkit, the T-Mesh system ensures there is always a signal path between each sensor and the WARP.

Lower Costs

Unlike many other platforms, once a Checkit system has been installed there are few on going costs. For example there are:

  • No licence fees.
  • No fees for additional users.
  • No software upgrade fees.
  • No IT maintenance costs.

Temperature monitoring in clinical labs is essential for safety, quality, and compliance, ensuring reliable diagnostics. While not a cure-all, digital tools like Checkit improve record accuracy, response times, and operational resilience. Whether managing ultra-low storage, ambient conditions, or blood storage, Checkit delivers. Contact us to learn more or find a solution tailored to your lab’s needs.
