Anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK) is a novel receptor protein-tyrosine kinase.¹ ALK can create a fusion protein with a nuclear protein gene called nucleophosmin (NPM) via the amino terminus of NPM and the catalytic domain of ALK.² The product of this fusion protein is oncogenic.¹ Studies have found this chromosomal translocation in most anaplastic large-cell non-Hodgkin’s lymphomas, making ALK a good marker for anaplastic large cell lymphomas.²
